When utilized while still unripe, this ingredient is essential in various Thai cuisine, such as green curry and certain types of chili sauces. Some may classify it as a spice, rather than a vegetable, due to its bitter taste and numerous seeds, resulting in a satisfying "pop" when bitten into. It is an early bloomer, and its foliage is distinct and highly decorative. The fruit is best harvested for consumption when bright green, and for seed extraction when it turns orange. Once the fruit changes to the latter, we advise against consuming it. This particular species is also known as Turkey Berry and has a rich history in traditional medicine.

KEY GROWING INFORMATION

Begin cultivating the seeds indoors in quality potting soil as early as February or no later than April. Ensure the seedlings are well-watered and kept warm. Transfer to larger 4” pots when they have developed their first two mature leaves and move them to the outdoor garden after the threat of frost has subsided.
