These are the world-famous BIG Iceland poppies, bred by Biancheri Creazioni in Italy and known by a number of trade names. Italian, Icelandic Poppy or Papaver ‘La Dolce Vita Mix’ (aka Hummingbird, Sherbert Mix) is a new custom mix in Bianco (white), Rosa Intenso (pink) and Rosa Chiaro (apricot/peach). Italian poppies are known for their large flowers and tall stems. A citrusy scent and abundant flowering habit stretching from early spring through midsummer make them a highly prized cutting garden addition.

KEY GROWING INFORMATION

DAYS TO GERMINATION:

7-12 days at 65-75°F (18-24°C)

SOWING:

Transplant - Sow into 128-cell or other small cell tray 6-8 weeks before transplanting. Cover seeds very lightly - I prefer vermiculite. Bottom water or mist to avoid displacing seeds and soil. Harden off and transplant outdoors, or transplant directly into a covered structure. Direct seed - Sow in early spring, fall, or winter. Iceland poppies grow best in cooler conditions – below 70°F. Bloom production and quality declines as temperatures rise. Surface-sow and keep soil evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Pinching plants is not necessary or beneficial.

LIGHT PREFERENCE:

Sun/Part Shade.

PLANT HEIGHT:

15-20".

PLANT SPACING:

6-12".

HARDINESS ZONES:

Zones 4-9. Blooms late spring until summer in northern climates and early spring until early summer in warmer climates when grown outdoors. Prefers cool summers and may self-sow. Iceland poppy is a perennial in its native land but has a biennial nature in our gardens. It blooms luxuriantly in spring from an August sowing into fertile, sharply drained soils outdoors. It is also often grown as an annual, sown indoors in pots in late January to flower the same year. In areas with high heat and humidity, they are a spring delight only.

VASE LIFE:

5-7 days.

HARVEST:

As the buds just begin to open and show a bit of color but before they fully expand. Place in clear water. Deadhead regularly for continuing bloom in cool summer areas.

SOIL REQUIREMENTS:

Moist, well-drained soil.

USES:

Cut flower. Beds, borders, mass plantings, and containers.

SCIENTIFIC NAME:

Papaver nudicaule

When to Plant

Fall or winter. Establish under cool conditions.

Plant in late fall/early winter for spring bloom. They usually start blooming just as tulips are finishing, and continue until summer heat shuts them down.
Harvesting

Pick daily at "color crack" stage when color can first be seen on the bud.
Post Harvest Care

Much is written about searing or burning the ends of poppies to seal in their milky sap. Alternatively, you can simply pick them and store dry in a closed cardboard box in your cooler. The stem will naturally seal itself. When you are ready to use the stems, simply stand them up in clean water in the cooler. They will start to open by the following morning. You can store dry flowers for up to a week with little decline in vase life.
Diseases / Insects

Botrytis and other fungal issues. Maintain space around each plant and good airflow
Notes

Hummingbird (aka Colibri) is a tetraploid version of the Iceland poppy. They grow taller and wider than the natural species and have very large flowers. A handful may be somewhat malformed. These types are best grown under cover as their buds can take on water and dew resulting in botrytis and rotting in the bud before they open. Iceland poppies hate heat (they are from Iceland after all).
